1 Corporate & investment banking
What really drives me in this job is that there’s no routine.
Yes it’s hectic, but you’re never bored – and I can get bored easily. Even at my level, as part of a client team, I get to interact with the executive level management of the companies I work with. Not many people are given that kind of opportunity so early in their career, which really makes me feel like I’m adding serious value.
Our clients aren’t always in Singapore – we cover the whole region – so I’ve already travelled to most South-East Asian countries. I spend about 50 per cent of my time in the office, and the other 50 per cent visiting clients. I’m also looking forward to maybe working in London, New York or Hong Kong at some time in the future. I’ve definitely come a long way in 15 months. I’ve learnt a lot about the markets, and my technical knowledge has grown, but the learning curve is still very steep.
Tips to help you stand out: Don’t try too hard to impress – just be yourself. However try to anticipate what your managers and clients want. If you really love the job, you’ll be happy and you won’t have to work extra hard to stand out, you will.

For me, the attraction of Equity Research is that I want to develop a good base of financial knowledge – what makes companies tick, the psychology behind investor movements and trying to forecast a company’s future.
I also like how it’s quite numbers focused.
At the moment I monitor a block of mining companies, tracking events that might affect their valuation. It can be very dynamic because you never know what’s going to happen next. It’s like a competition every day – anything can be thrown at you and you have to analyze it and have the best idea. Then you have to justify it to our sales force and the client, so you’ve got to be fairly strong-minded and persistent, particularly if you take a view that’s different from the rest of the market.
Tips to help you stand out: Work hard and build a good rapport with your colleagues because that will help you build a rapport with clients. Also be able to have a laugh with your workmates to keep things in perspective.

I used to be in auditing before I joined the firm, but I found I wanted to be more specialized.
Here I’m in a finance and accounting role, which lets me use my accounting skills, but I also get a real sense of the business and feel I can add value. Basically, we do the financial reporting for the monthly financial statements of all our various entities – I cover Australia and Hong Kong.
There are always new accounting issues and standards, new kinds of trades to understand and the business environment is becoming more complex, so there are lots of decision making processes to go through before the numbers are booked, with lots of input by other divisions. But the culture is very open. If you have a problem, our managers always encourage us to raise them and solve them together as a team. You’re not left there hanging by yourself.
Tips to help you stand out: The most important thing is to have a positive attitude. Also always be willing to learn, which should come naturally from your enthusiasm
4 Fixed Income
I joined Fixed Income a year ago, after four years in Corporate Finance.
I felt I needed a new challenge where I could continue to use my quantitative skills, but in a more dynamic environment. As long as you can prove you meet the requirements, the firm is very open to people moving internally – either between divisions, or geographically. The appeal of Fixed Income, particularly on the credit structuring and credit derivatives side, is that you need to be creative. There’s constant pressure to come up with innovative structures that will meet a client’s need.
I previously worked at another investment bank before joining here, but after five years I’m still a happy camper. I find the people here are much brighter on an intellectual level. They are great to work with and also genuinely nice on a personal level – we don’t just interact as colleagues, but also socially as friends.
Tips to help you stand out: Remember that your peers, colleagues and senior management will form an immediate impression of you from the first project you work on. Always be proactive
5 Information Techniques
For me, the attraction of pursuing an IT career within investment banking, is down to the quality of the projects you get to work on.
The firm is willing to invest in new technologies. And there’s the scope of the international environment. We’re serving the whole of Asia-Pacific, not just Hong Kong, and I get the chance to work on projects across the region. In fact all the IT people in Asia Pacific are very close because we travel so often.
When you’re supporting the main Equities trading engine, the big challenge is that even a minor technical issue can be critical for our users. It might only affect one or two trades, but these could be massive in dollar terms. You therefore have to develop an understanding of the equity trading flow so you can prioritize the critical issues. Accuracy is also vital, which is why we always try to work in pairs so we check each other’s work.
Tips to help you stand out: Keep an open mind, learn and try to meet your new colleagues to build up your human network.
